How often should you bathe your dog? It depends on coat and lifestyle

The question our groomers hear almost every day is “how often should I bathe my dog?” There is no single answer, but a few simple principles make the decision easy.

Start with coat type

• Short coats such as Pugs, Beagles and French Bulldogs: every 3–4 weeks
• Long or double coats such as Pomeranians, Goldens and Shih Tzus: every 2–3 weeks, with regular brushing
• Curly coats such as Poodles and Bichons: every 2–3 weeks, with a trim every 4–6 weeks

Then adjust for lifestyle

Dogs that sleep on your bed, run on grass regularly or live in a dusty city may need slightly more frequent baths. Dogs with skin conditions should follow their vet’s advice on frequency and shampoo.

Signs it is bath time
